On August 12, 1969 the annual Apprentice Boys of Derry parade passed near Catholic areas of Londonderry in Northern Ireland igniting long standing sectarian tensions. Days of rioting followed in Londonderry and other parts of Northern Ireland eventually leading to the British army being deployed to restore order.
