  • The Carrie Furnaces have recently been granted National Landmark status. The grounds surrounding the furnaces are slated to be developed into a green energy industrial park. Rankin, Pennsylvania, October, 2008.

They opened in 1884 and were acquired by Andrew Carnegie in 1898 as a source of molten iron for his steelmaking furnaces across the river in Homestead. Carrie Furnaces were recently granted National Landmark status and are slated to be preserved and included in a National Park dedicated to Pittsburgh's famed steel industry.
